Frequently Asked Questions
Bikram’s Beginning Yoga Class is a style of Hatha Yoga developed by Bikram Choudhury which is a series of 26 postures (asanas) and two breathing excises (pranayamas). Class is suitable for all ages and levels of ability. Each posture stretches and strengthens specific muscles, ligaments, and joints needed for the next posture.
All of the postures taught in this class are beginning postures, no prior experience is necessary. However, Bikram Yoga challenges everyone - beginners, intermediates, and experts.
First of all, a very warm welcome to Bikram Yoga Downtown - we hope you enjoy our studio. All new students are encouraged to start with one of our Trial Membership Offers: One Month – (30 Days) unlimited { $40 online } | { $50 in studio } -or- Two Weeks – (14 Days) unlimited { $25 online } | { $30 in studio }. Make sure you arrive at least 25-30 minutes before your first class, even if you have booked online, to make sure you don't lose your spot. Sorry, but no late admittance even if you are signed in, changed and ready to go. Make sure you read the FAQs below and our Studio Etiquette and Online Booking Terms and of course if you have any 'HOT' questions then just email us. We also encourage you to purchase the Bikram Yoga Book to educate you more on what Bikram Yoga is.
The yoga room is kept at approximately 105°F (40°C) and 40% humidity. It is heated intentionally to warm your muscles, which allows you to work deeper and safer, seeing faster results. Heat takes the trauma out of stretching, heals and helps prevent injuries. It also promotes sweating which helps flush toxins from your body, giving you a wonderful glow from head to toe. The heat combined with the sequence of the postures is what makes Bikram Yoga so special.

Come as often as you can. A daily practice from the beginning can relax into a regimen of 3 or 4 times per week. You'll find you want to do this practice. It's fun! It works! You will start organizing your schedule to fit it in. In fact, the harder this yoga is for you initially, the more you need to do it and the more you are going to benefit from it. The time and effort you put into Bikram Yoga will be returned to you tenfold.
We strongly recommend that you stay in the room for the full time of every class! This is really important as the sequence is performed in a specific way to work every part of your body and we want to make sure you get the full workout. Commit yourself to staying in the room for the full class including the final Savasana (relaxation). This is where all the benefits of your hard work take place. The heat can be a big challenge for a lot of people at the start of their practice so don’t try and squeeze all your ambition into one class. Pace yourself and you will do just fine! Of course if you have to leave, please let your teachers know but try not to disturb your fellow yogis. This should be an exception, not a regular occurrence. Get your body acclimated to the heat; don’t run away from it! This can be one of the hardest things to master but once you get it, you will transform your practice.
All new students start on our Trial Membership which entitles you to attend an unlimited number of classes for one month (30 days) or two weeks (14 days) consecutively at our studio. This is because one class will not give you an understanding of what Bikram Yoga is all about. It takes a while to get used to the heat and to start focusing on the sequence of postures. We strongly recommend coming at least 3-4 times a week in the first 14 days to give yourself a chance to get used to it although some people come every day which is great! If you only did one class, you will not experience just how wonderful this yoga can be! The trial offer is the best and only way to do this. With a little determination and commitment you will reap all the benefits.

Yes, yes, yes! Whatever your fitness level you will find Bikram Yoga challenging (that’s why so many people come back for more). The postures (asanas) combine strength, flexibility and balance to give you a total body workout. As with other forms of cardiovascular exercise, regular practice will also aid weight loss.

Our evening classes usually get really busy and so we strongly recommend booking these classes in advance. In these classes, you will be positioned closely to other students so be prepared to get sweaty with those around you! The humidity and energy in these classes is incredible. We suggest that you start with the quieter classes first and avoid these peak times during your trial offer. However, we encourage you to come to class no matter what to fit your schedule.
This yoga is for you! This is the most common misconception that prevents people from coming to a yoga class. Yoga is not about how flexible you are, it is about stretching your body and spine in all directions. If you simply try the right way, your balance, endurance and flexibility will naturally increase. You will be receiving 100% of the benefits.

You should drink plenty of water everyday so you arrive to class ALREADY well-hydrated, this is much better than trying to hydrate immediately before or during class. With Bikram Yoga, you are simultaneously cleansing all the systems of your body from the inside out. It is important to stay hydrated so your elimination systems (bowel, urinary, and skin) can support your efforts.
You are going to sweat a lot so it’s important to keep the water flowing. We should all try and drink at least 2 litres of water every day. We recommend you drink 1/2 litre of water an hour before class - enough to keep you hydrated during class but not so much that you feel bloated during the postures. In the class itself, after the initial warm-up postures, you should sip water between postures whenever you need to. After class, it’s also really important to get those lost electrolytes back into your system as well. We sell a variety of isotonic tablets and sachets at our reception as well as refreshing coconut water which is a fantastic and completely natural isotonic drink. Some regular students find that drinking a mixture of Himalayan pink salt and 2-3 squirts of lemon juice in their water before and after class can really help with hydration. We also recommend lots of electrolytes such as Ultima, Emergen-C or Bikram Balance to get your essential minerals when practicing regularly.
This is going to vary on a person by person basis. Typically a good formula is take your body weight and divide by 2. This is how many ounces of water you should consume daily. Here's an example: 140 lb/2 = 70 oz. 64 oz is a half gallon. Seem like a lot? Remember our bodies are mostly water. Being fully hydrated helps take pressure off of organs to do their jobs and helps flush the body and keep it running smoothly. As a new yoga student it takes a little while to understand and appreciate good hydration, that is why it's important to pace yourself and rest whenever you need to during class.
Practicing Bikram Yoga requires energy, and food is energy for the body. However if you come to class with a full stomach, it could be very uncomfortable. Here are some general guidelines on eating before clas: if you attend afternoon or evening yoga class, leave about 2 to 3 hours of time between your last large meal and your class. If you attend a morning yoga class, it can be very helpful to have some food-calories in your body, so don't skip breakfast completely! Try having some fruit or toast (something that digests easily) an hour or so before class. These are general guidelines only, please talk to your Bikram teacher in the lobby if you have specific questions on this topic. Please read our nutritional guide.
You are going to sweat so try and avoid loose clothing. Women normally wear sports tops and bottoms. Men normally wear shorts with a T-shirt or sports top being optional. Please do not wear underwear as outerwear and always be decently covered. And remember, white clothing when wet reveals all!
Please let the teacher know if you are pregnant, had surgery, or have any injuries, illnesses, or special conditions. You can still do most yoga postures, with a few modifications that the teacher will show you.
o Towels x 2 (1 for class and 1 to shower) o Bottle of water (1 litre) o Yoga mat We also rent mats and towels and sell water if you forget. We provide free lockers and showers for your convenience.
Yes, all of our instructors have undertaken an intensive training in Bikram Yoga and have been personally trained by Bikram Choudhury. Bikram certified instructors provide a safe and enjoyable class. Check out our instructors here.
We firmly believe that the Bikram yoga sequence is the best possible hot yoga sequence out there. We carried out a survey which you may have filled out yourself and we had a huge response which showed that over half of our customers would like to do a combination of longer and shorter classes. The reality is that we understand people are busy, and often short on time, and on those days we would rather they did some yoga rather than none. We think this is something we can offer without compromising the integrity of the class.
The traditional Bikram yoga sequence is a 90-minute sequence. We would always hope that our students will predominantly practice the 90-minute sequence. The 60-minute sequence is still a Bikram Yoga sequence, and identically follows the same set of postures. A group of senior teachers have come together to formulate a shorter version, but this is still very much a Bikram yoga class.
The more you do, the more benefit you will feel, but we hope this will allow you to come more often and combine shorter and longer classes. Of course for some people, a 60-minute class may work for you better. It’s about giving people individual choice.
We hope that you will continue to do a combination. Of course the more you do, the more benefits you will feel. Whether that takes shape as doing shorter classes more regularly, a combination of long and short, or just long classes, it’s about giving each of you a maximum choice that works with your own schedule.
B90 is the 90-minute class and B60 is the 60-minute class.
In B60, the classes are shorter of course but every posture is included, just some second sets are taken out so you must work hard because they are no second chances. This class is generally faster and more of a flow.
Just come take class… the most important thing is to come and try it out for yourself!
We advise new students to familiarize yourself with the postures in a 90-minute class before you try the faster moving shorter classes.
